We hide three secrets within each bag we make in honor of the women in our program and those still struggling in addiction. Learn more about our three secrets here.
100% of our materials are donated from commercial sources. They come from premium suppliers such as Ultrafabrics, Floor 13 Textiles or are repurposed from upcycled, post-production materials. We save approximately 3,000 pounds of fabric from entering landfills each year. Our reclaimed materials include original 1955 Mercedes-Benz upholstery, military uniforms, and the refurbished leather from Southwest Airlines seats.
We work our hardest to deliver a quality product and we stand behind the craftsmanship of our bags! We will repair any manufacturing defects found within two months of the purchase date when a receipt is provided. Repairs take 3-4 weeks for us to complete. In the event a bag can not be fixed we will replace it with an item of equal value. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and include your dated receipt as well as a description and photos of the issue.
100% of your purchase goes directly to our mission of ending the addiction relapse cycle.
Our bags are crafted in a studio located in NY’s Hudson Valley from 100% upcycled materials by skilled artisans. We estimate that we eliminate over 3,000 pounds of textile waste from entering landfills each year. While our materials are 100% upcycled, which in turn makes a positive environmental impact, a few opportunities remain for us to improve our overall sustainability, in particular the sourcing of our hardware. We work with industry partners to continuously improve our sustainability and environmental impact.
From a social impact perspective, in over 6 years of offering full-time employment we have only experienced a single relapse for our employee base. 100% of the women we work with are out of transitional housing within 12 months of employment. We estimate that each woman we employ has a positive economic impact on their community of approximately $150,000 per year. The women on our team become designers, seamstresses, and project managers. They experience success, promotion and gain the skills and income to live independently.
Our entire mission is about improving the holistic wellbeing of our artisans including their financial health. We continue to look for ways to elevate our impact by increasing our artisans income and benefits every year as well.
Six years ago, Unshattered formed a holistic community of loving support to encourage women to continue their journey of sobriety. Like most addiction recovery programs, we believe there is a spiritual component to healing. Research consistently shows that a holistic approach, improving the physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual health of an individual, are core factors for women to maintain their recovery. We believe women are most likely to thrive when they can truly become the person they were called and created to be. In an effort to assist team members in choosing well for themselves and others, Unshattered has established the following valued Christian rhythms: dignity, spiritual discipline, honesty & integrity, faith & risk, and work unto God. It is our expectation and hope that our employees choose to conduct their personal and professional behavior in alignment with these values.
Our program is currently just for women. Here are some resources to organizations that offer a similar program for men. We have not personally worked with them so please be aware of that as you reach out to them.
- Cornbread Hustle is a staffing agency for second chances, they provide meaningful employment to people with criminal records and in recovery. They have background-friendly jobs in Texas, South Dakota, North Carolina, and South Carolina. http://cornbreadhustle.com/jobs
- Manufacture Good is an organization that offers 6-month cohorts 4 times per year for young men stuck in a rut. They are located in the heart of Downtown Birmingham, AL. https://manufacturegood.org/
When you support Unshattered, you are offering women a combination of community, employment, and personal and professional development. This combination gives them the opportunity to find their purpose and live an addiction-free life. Just like your handbag, these women are being made new again.
